Since late November, I’ve already been having what I termed “Holiday Sickness”, which usually means intermittent bouts of cold, cough, and wheezing (which sometimes reminds me of how my cat must feel like whenever he chokes on his own furball…only that I don’t choke and, of course, I don’t accumulate furballs in my throat). In my experience, it lasts until late January or February.
But then, of course, “Holiday Sickness” is not the right medical term for it. I suspect it’s just an allergic reaction to some allergens common during the cooler months which is from December to February.
It resolves with the usual antihistamines but sometimes, the wheezing can be quite bothersome, even if it just spontaneously resolves.
But what I find more bothersome is that I get more easily distracted lately. One day, I can come up with loads of blog post ideas and then, when I’ve finally decided to write them down, the thoughts disappear. Poof! Gone. And when I try to bend my mind this way and that, I still won’t be able to recover the lost thoughts until maybe a day or two when the thoughts will be back inside my head again. And then, when I try to write it down, it will be gone again. And the cycle goes on.
So, how do I get myself out of this?
Sleep.
The body needs to slow down and heal itself and the mind is better receptive when it’s well-rested.
Good night.

Hi Prudence. I indeed missed your long post. =)
I suggest writing some light stuff and those that make you smile.

The problem with allergic rhinitis is that it is always there bothering the patient once the environment cools. And most patients who have difficulty accepting the fact of its perenniality shift from one physician to another thinking they might find the appropriate solution. What they do not know is that the sole cure to chronic rhinitis is accepting its presence and increasing fluid intake.

hi! sad to hear that your allergies are acting up - might help if you try some nasal spray on top of the antihistamine, just until the allergies clear up.
you’re lucky you can keep a pet… my friend with AR wheezes at just a sight of a four-legged creature in the same room. (hmmm… maybe that isn’t AR after all.) Or maybe they put something dusty up in your immediate environment.
anyway, hope your sniffles clear up soon! And ditto on writing about light stuff that make you feel better.

to Janette Toral:
Thanks for the advice! I just hope I’ll remember stuff better so that when I’ve the time to post, I’d be able to write about it :-). I think what helps me now is to always have a small notebook or a pda with me so I could jot down ideas, no matter how incomplete or vague, whenever it comes to me. That way, when I’ve got the time to sit down, I can run through what I’ve jotted down and pick up those that will be useful for my post.

This past two weeks, I took a bus trip to NYC and with all the crowded bus, subways, finally succumbed to “holiday cold” and my hosts, both practicing md gave me a heavy dose of gel vitamin C and it helped a lot to relieve the symptons. I very seldom catch colds even in winter (season for cold and flu) even I am at a risk category, (senior citizen) and my solution is exercise and lot of it and proper diet and taking my medication regularly…
