We Could Always Do Something
If there is one thing that we should learn from the death of Musa Dimasidsing, it’s never get resigned to the attitude that we couldn’t do something about anything. We could always do something, like what Musa Dimasidsing did.
Dimasidsing is a school district supervisor in Maguindanao who was a member of the board of election inspectors of the province during the May 14 elections. Allegedly he refused to sign documents attesting to the absence of cheating in the election in the province. He was then shot dead last Saturday in front of an islamic school in Pikit, North Cotabato Province, also in Mindanao by unknown assailants.
Ordinary citizens are getting killed for reasons that are political. And yet, officials in the military kept reiterating that the recent elections have been “generally peaceful”. That phrase kept echoing inside my head but my mind refuses to accept because what my mind sees is not parallel to what they want my mind to see.
It is good seeing that the ordinary people are putting efforts to fight the corruption in our electoral system, refusing to resign to the idea that the crooked system cannot be straightened and that we leave it the way it is. This is what we should be vigilantly doing. However, we, the people, shouldn’t be killed for our just dedication to keep our elections honest and truthful. The military and the police should be out there defending us from those who want to corrupt the system. Unfortunately, it seems that some of the uniformed men are actually part of this corruption.
But this shouldn’t defeat us. People like Musa Dimasidsing believe so. Even at the cost of their lives.
No, I’m not saying we should all emulate the death of Musa Dimasidsing and all those that died because of political agenda. We are not glorifying their death; rather, we are glorifying the heroic deeds they made while they are still living.
Let’s not wait until all our present-day heroes die one by one fighting the corruption in the land. If we can protect one another, we should. If we can pin down the assailants of Musa Dimasidsing and others who died just because they want to voice out the truth, let’s do all that we can. Let not the fear of those who are in power hinder us because, after all, we, the people have the power. We can topple those who are abusive…but how?
Musa Dimasidsing was a teacher of honest values and perspective. If we can all teach our children the values of our voting wisely, keeping the truth amidst the wolves who want to debase it, and to instill in their hearts that a crooked system can be changed, perhaps in the near future we will finally win.
Let us show our anger at our deprivation of a clean and honest elections. Let them know that we know they have not been honest.
And in remembrance of the deeds of Musa Dimasidsing, let us keep on fighting.

Ngayon ko lang nalaman yung tungkol kay Musa Dimasidsing na yun. Nakakalungkot. Pero nakakahanga siya.
ahh yes, i knew of musa dimasidsing from an email of a friend. makes me wonder, how many more musa does the government need dead to actually act on things like this.
to lei: Until some honest persons in the government will start acting soon, I’m afraid we’ll see more Musa Dimasidsings in the future. Only good can prevent the evil things from happening.
Vigilance and letting the people in power know that we are watching them is the only deterrent against those whose mosquito sized brain seems to have fallen on their index fingers.
